APCO Standards Activities In Progress:

Draft 2009 Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Telecommunicator


This APCO standard identifies the minimum training requirements for public safety communications telecommunicators. This position is typically charged with receiving, processing, transmitting, and conveying public safety information to dispatchers, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medical and emergency management personnel. This document seeks to define training in certain knowledge, skills, and abilities to be provided to telecommunicators by the agency.

  • To submit comments on the revisions by July 30, 2009 e-mail standards@apco911.org. When submitting a comment, please include your contact information, the comment and suggested resolution, and reference the page number and line number(s).
  • All comments will be reviewed and considered, but please note this review is not part of the APCO American National Standard (ANS) process. The final draft will be submitted to APCO's Board of Officers and Executive Council for adoption. After adoption, the final draft will be submitted to APCO's Standards Development Committee for consideration to be submitted through the APCO ANS Process.

 

Candidate APCO ANS 1.106.1-200x: Core Competencies for Public Safety Communications Manager/Director


This document outlines the core competencies that define the basic functions, duties, responsibilities, knowledge, abilities and expertise attributable to individuals who manage public safety communications functions. In addition, the standard respects the diverse nature of public safety communications, competencies may vary dependent upon the size of the agency, service demographics and type of services provided. Areas of core competencies identified include: managing self & personal skills, providing direction, facilitating change, working with people, using resources, and achieving results.


Public Review and Comment Period ended June 22, 2009. The committees are reviewing comments received and preparing the final draft.
